Effectively restricts jays, crows, starlings and grackles from feeding as their shoulders are too large to fit through the cage. Downy woodpeckers, chickadees and red breasted nutchatches can get inside to eat in peace. With their longer tongue, some larger woodpeckers and just reach the suet from outside (as depicted in photo) however jays, crows, starlings and grackles do not possess a long tongue.
