Birds cannot see glass and don't understand the architectural cues, such as window frames, mullions, and handles, that help people detect it. Some birds try to fly to reflected sky or trees, or they see through windows on opposite sides of your house and try to fly 'through the hole' . When a bird collides with a window it is enough to kill them, severely injure, or leave stunned on the ground - vulnerable to predators.

Unlike some sources of bird mortality that often kill weaker individuals, there is no distinction among victims of window strikes. Because window collisions are equally dangerous all birds, they can have a serious impact on bird populations.
