The 30" or garden weathervanes are specifically designed for mounting on smaller structures or for use in the garden. The full size weathervanes are well suited for homes, garages, or larger gazebos.  The further away the weathervane is, the smaller it will look.  Taller buildings look best with larger weathervanes.  Some people find it useful to fashion a rough cardboard cutout in the dimensions of the weathervane they are considering and hold it up against their building. (No need to climb up on the roof - its just to get a sense of the scale!). 

The directionals (N-S-W-E) remain stationary at all times. It is the weathervane ornament that moves and points into the wind or from where the wind is blowing.
